Default Are London lecturers going to lose their jobs?

Everyone is being squeezed in this recession there is no doubt about it. Most sectors have really been whittled down however I thought that education was a recession proof job? Education is an ongoing service that surely cannot be decreased any further?

Apparently universities are thinking of cutting back on their lecturers in order to cut back on costs.
6,000 lecturers facing redundancy, says universities union | Education | guardian.co.uk
Around 2000 London jobs could go from this alone! Madness!

What confuses me is that this year, more students then ever are going to university. That means more tuition fees and more accommodation fees. Then there is money from washing machines, on campus shops etc – so why do they suddenly feel the need to cut back on lecturers? Can they suddenly not fund themselves or are they using the recession as an excuse to cut back on costs? Please someone fill me in because I do not understand…
I am going to university in September and I am paying £3 225 (I think) on tuition for this year. Surely if they are going to cut back on lecturers and cut back on the service I am paying for, I should be paying less? Wishful thinking anyway!!

Hi Emily,
This is utter nonsense!!! Luckily it’s not out of the horse’s mouth yet but only a survey. Surveys can something be full of rubbish…I hope. I have no knowledge on how the education sector works but I am sorry what will happen to the country when in a couple of years time we realise the recession has died down but we’ve neglected our future skills?
Already there is a shortage of skills in London. This, I believe will just add to the issue if it happens.
What will you study?
